I totally agree! There are far more people more deserving who have sacrificed their own lives for others and they're never as newsworthy for some reason...???
'Tis true, however, you can't downplay the international impact Michael Jackson has made on the music world, and on the African American Community. He really cleared the path for today's performers. I am sure, as well, that plenty of people who also make huge impacts in our worlds are never fully recognized or appreciated and it would be good to know more about them.

I vote for MJ as the latter. "Celebrity" just doesn't fit when you're talking about him, regardless of if if you think he was a pedophile or you feel his music in your bones or not. This is a loss to the culture, dominant though it may be. Yes, there are big issues with that, but we all participate to a degree. Peace, yo.
If you want a footnote in history you have to get a gimmick. Feathery hair, great nipples or a really good moonwalk are already taken. Elvis did it right by faking his death so he could enjoy seeing his legacy live on while he got to enjoy retirement out of the limelight.
